Every time zone has a UTC offset, also called a time zone offset: how far local time sits from Coordinated Universal Time. The GMT offset is UTC+0. IST is UTC+5:30 all year.

EST is always UTC−5. Eastern Time (ET) switches between EST and EDT with daylight saving time.

Daylight Saving Time and Time Zone Conversion

Daylight saving time (DST) is why a conversion that is 3 hours in January can be 3 hours in July — or not, if only one place springs forward. Eastern Time uses EST in standard time and EDT during daylight saving time. Pacific Time uses PST, then PDT.

Eastern Time or New York uses the date to pick EST or EDT automatically. EST does not. EST is always UTC−5, even in July. If you type EST, you keep UTC−5 — the converter will not switch you to EDT.
